Story Content

English Original

Buttery corn smoke brushed Iris’s cheek as she lifted her star-shaped lantern from the craft table and stepped toward the winding path. Overhead strings of LEDs flickered brighter than the falling dusk, throwing sharp shadow-edges across the packed earth. Griffon followed, his own fish lantern swaying beside her; he kept his pace slow to conserve the small battery sealed inside. A high speaker released a cheerful melody that skipped between the trunks like a quick drum. Iris had trimmed each tissue point neatly, yet the wire had been bent by an earlier nudge, so one arm of the star leaned forward. When the first cool breeze funneled between two poles, air slipped through that gap, puffing the soft panel outward like a tiny sail and jerking the lantern off balance. The dowel twisted, slipped from her fingers, and the glowing shape skimmed ahead on its string, dangling just above the ground.

The swinging lantern brushed a shallow bowl of paste someone carried behind her; a trace amount splattered onto the leaf-littered path. A dry leaf stuck to the wet drop, clung to a passing shoe, and flipped forward with the next stride. It flew beneath a bright fabric hammock stretched between low trees, tapping the canvas so lightly that the man resting inside shifted only a finger, yet that was enough to tilt the paper cup balanced on his knee. Lemonade beaded over the rim, fell in bright beads, and the liquid trickled under the hammock in a thin ribbon. Iris lunged into a short sprint, caught her lantern’s dowel before it met another visitor’s knees, and steadied the star until the breeze lost its grip. Behind her, the cup settled upright again; the ribbon of lemonade kept creeping over the dirt. Farther down the path, a moth skimmed the narrow puddle, climbed through the pooled lantern glow, and disappeared into the dark canopy still moving above the crowd.

Translation
