English Original
A clipped metallic rattle rose from the pen cup when Rafael tipped it onto the form-filling table. The smooth vinyl seat pressed a cold line across the back of his arms while the clipboard’s ridged edge rested against his palms. Four ballpoint pens slid out—each barrel warm from many hands—and tiny scratches on their sides caught the flat ceiling light. He had promised his grandmother, who waited near the entrance ramp, that both consent pages would be finished before the next number appeared on the orange display. Down the hallway, the label printer chattered with brisk enthusiasm, and each burst echoed along the linoleum in uneven pulses.
Rafael clicked the first pen. The compression spring inside flexed, yet only a weak dot marked the paper; the ink seemed to evaporate before it reached the tip. A faint plastic-and-alcohol smell hinted at slow decay inside the barrel. He set that pen aside and tried the second—its missing cap had allowed the gel to crust, a quiet metamorphosis from liquid to brittle dust. The third produced two shaky lines, then nothing. The display near reception moved forward another space; his shoulders tightened. One pen remained. Its flow felt steady but thinned halfway down the longer page. Rafael stopped, flipped to the shorter consent sheet, and copied the required name, date, and signature in tight strokes, each letter leaning forward as if hurrying. He returned the half-blank longer page to the clipboard stack; accepting that smaller task kept the queue from slipping past him.
He placed the single completed sheet in the tray, nudged the tired pen back into the cup, and the lone barrel rolled in a slow circle against the scratched plastic bottom while the printer’s next burst rattled deeper into the hallway.
Translation
