English Original
Five red globes swayed overhead at perfect three-step intervals, and Iris tapped Joy’s elbow as crisp leaf fragments cracked underfoot. “Did someone count the spaces?” Her question floated between bursts of distant violin loops, the constant hiss of the food grill, and the papery hush of tissue panels brushing in the breeze. Their own star-shaped lantern chimed on its wire when a stronger gust passed. The LED inside buzzed, then faded, then buzzed again, creating an uneven rhythm that drew glances from walkers nearby. Iris checked the frame; a kitchen hanger, bent during afternoon household chores, still held its shape. That small act of ingenuity had seemed clever earlier, yet the metal now clicked against the support dowel each time the light dimmed, as if the lantern itself were obstinate about shining smoothly.
Darkness thickened, and the lantern became their only guide through the narrowing path, so Iris finally aimed to steady the fickle glow. She pressed the base with both thumbs; the contact tightened, and brightness returned long enough to dazzle the wet leaves with sharp gold flashes. Ten steps later the flicker repeated, the same soft protest of metal on wood. She halted again, this time wedging a narrow strip of spare tissue between battery cap and frame—a quiet compromise that shortened the rattle without changing the design. The lamp brightened, though a faint tremor in the beam survived like distant drumbeats. If the contact slipped again, she would have to walk back toward the crowded craft tables, yet for now the sleeve of light stretched farther down the track. At the reflection pond’s edge, twin images quivered across the water: Iris held the steadier, softly pulsing star, while Joy raised her flawless fish lantern, and the two glows drifted apart across the rippling surface.
Translation
