The rubber-coated cart handle dug a narrow ridge across Vernon's fingers while the steel-grey floor reflected the cart's wavering outline. His mother compared prices under the bakery's fluorescent panels, pointing between crusty loaves arranged like a small bread gallery. Vernon's first task looked simple: fetch a sandwich loaf, wait for the baker to run it through the slicing machine. The front wheel of their cart locked on a silver seam, and he needed both hands to rock the frame forward. By the time the cart budged, a customer ahead requested unusually thick slices, slowing the machine to a quiet stutter. Steam from cooling loaves drifted across the glass, and Vernon waited as the queue hardly moved an inch.
While he balanced the loaf against his chest, a terra-brown flour smear brushed onto his navy sleeve, leaving a powdery band. If the machine had stayed clear, the loaf would have been sliced within seconds, yet the queue still crept forward. Vernon studied the uncut crust, noticing tiny air holes that looked like silver specks under the cool lights. Scratches whitened the steel guard, clear proof of many years of sliding blades and winter loaves. As the baker shifted a display board of rolls shaped like pumpkin segments for the coming thanksgiving display, an idea nudged Vernon. He eased out of the line, guided the squealing cart toward the bag stand, and tore three perforated sheets for rolls instead. The rolls required no machine; his mother offered an affectionate pat on his shoulder and kept checking prices without losing her place. A minute later, chilled herb aromas from the freezer aisle drifted toward the bakery, and the cool scent mixed with warm dough. Back on the polished floor, the narrow imprint of the locked wheel curved beside a faint trail of terra-brown flour.
