"Why does the dial jump like that?" Drake pointed as a sharp glare bounced off the metal scale at the produce corner, sending a white halo across stacked nectarines. He and Luna carried a paper bag of fruit toward the tray, yet the needle danced again before anything touched it. A patch of striped shadow shifted above; warm light had struck the canvas awning, and beads of leftover dew loosened. One drop hit the tray, then another, each bead flashing like a tiny prism. Drake declared that the weight looked wrong and slid a cloth over the surface. The fabric soaked up moisture, but the next bead arrived before he could read the dial, and reconciliation between scale and price remained out of reach.

A delivery cart rattled through the lane, forcing the vendor to drag crates inward and blocking the children from the shaded side of the stall. While they waited, sunlight widened its spectrum across the tray, warming it further. The remainder of the dew turned to steam and fogged the dial cover from inside. Drake unbuckled his canvas satchel, laid it lengthwise along the awning edge, and the thick fabric absorbed the warm drip line. Cooler shadow returned to the tray; numbers finally steadied. He had already placed two peaches on the plate when the vendor came back, and the reading stayed fixed. Payment finished, the children crossed to a stone bench near the stall so the fruit could cool. Minutes later they returned; the tray that had been slick and shining was now dry beneath the satchel’s dark strip, and a bead of water slid along the canvas and fell toward the gutter.
