English Original
The cart’s rubber handle pressed a shallow ridge into Luke’s palm as he guided it past a stack of potted daffodil blooms that glowed like tiny lamps under the ceiling spots. Trent walked beside him, and their basket already held a cloth pouch of dried lentils that had slipped from a promotion bin. A freezer door stood open nearby, releasing a chilled ribbon of air that curled along the polished floor. Inside, plush toy bears were packaged beside the pizzas; their label showed them curled as if ready to hibernate through winter frost. Luke had tilted the cart to free its front wheel from a floor seam when the basket jerked sideways.
The pouch slid out, struck the metal shelf, and knocked a lone tin of corn. The tin rolled across the smooth tile, tapped a magnet strip fixed to the base of a rotating end-cap, and the strip fascinated the can long enough to redirect its path. It veered left, nudged the leg of a narrow display table, and three daffodil pots began to wobble. One plastic bird perched among the blooms sensed movement; a pressure switch under its feet triggered a quick electronic chirp that cut through the freezer hum. Luke lunged forward, catching the front pot with both hands while his elbow bumped the table edge, halting the rest of the row. The sudden stop clipped the bird’s switch again, and the toy fell silent. Warm bakery light from the opposite wall settled over the scene, showing a thin smear of potting soil across the glossy tile. At knee height, the last daffodil pot still rocked in a slow crescent toward the edge of its saucer.
