Vivian nudged the glass door open, and cool air seeped around her shoes as the bell bounced overhead. It was class tradition to give the retiring science teacher a bouquet, so she stepped straight to the wrapping station where orange lilies rose from a bucket like a quiet volcano under fluorescent light. Behind her, pale carnations were being arranged by the florist for another customer. While the florist trimmed stems, the spray nozzle above the display hissed on its fifteen-minute rhythm; a fine cloud drifted over the station, invisible until damp dots appeared on the pale tissue paper roll. Vivian tugged a sheet free, but the hidden moisture tore a zig-zag right through the centre. Startled, she tried pulling another layer with quicker hands, yet droplets clung to her fingertips, making each grip slide. The sharp tap of scissors hitting the board echoed like a tiny gavel announcing a delay she had not expected.
As she paused, her friend Theo, waiting beside the ribbon rack, idly spun a blue-grey spool. The loose ribbon unfurled across the counter, crossing the torn tissue; the overlapping strands looked ready for a quarrel of colours. They now faced a different snag: the spool’s hole had slipped over the metal peg the wrong way during his spinning, so the tape measure embossed on its rim lay hidden. Without that guide, Vivian could not judge the sixty-centimetre length required, a small procedural dispute that threatened more delay. She shifted tactics, lifting the spool off the peg, twisting it half a turn, and lowering it back so the measure faced outward. Holding the fabric at a wider angle, she drew slowly; friction steadied the pull and the ribbon fell flat. By then, the mist had faded and the second tissue remained dry, leaving a faint wet edge on the discarded sheet near the scissors. A silver thread of moisture shone under the ceiling strip-light.
Translation
