Crimson tissue already circled the lower half of Holly’s bouquet, leaving the green upper stems exposed in mid-air. She braced one elbow against the wrapping station; the counter’s edge pressed below her ribs while the bouquet’s weight pulled against her forearms. A distant hum from the storage cooler rolled through the shop, and soft giggling drifted from the entrance where her parent compared greeting cards. Three full layers had to cover the flowers before the afternoon ceremony. She tugged the first sheet sideways, but moisture from the spray nozzle had softened the center, and it tore along a damp crease. The surviving strip hugged the stems, giving her one thin layer—exactly a third of the cover she needed.

The bouquet had been chosen during a small exhibition of spring roses, and every petal pressed gently against her palm. Holly leaned her hip closer to anchor the flowers, then angled her shoulders to drag a second sheet downward. Cool air from a customer opening the glass door brushed her knuckles and stiffened the paper, allowing a cleaner pull. A burst of laughter rolled from the work counter when a loose stem slid off a tray, making the startled customer exclaim and hop back. She wrapped again; the second layer climbed just past the ribbon line, but a gap as wide as two fingers still glimmered near the top. The timing nozzle hissed without warning; mist speckled the station and would soon turn unused tissue limp. If the ribbon slipped again, the stems would pop free, so Holly tilted the bouquet upward, shielding the dry corner she needed against her forearm.

Next, she flexed her wrists, slid the bouquet beneath the roll, and pinched the driest edge she could find. The sheet felt firm under her fingertips, yet one corner already sagged with fresh droplets. She rolled her shoulders forward, spinning the flowers in slow half-circles while easing the tissue upward. On the third turn the final layer met the others; three sheets overlapped and gripped the stems inside a neat cone. Holly straightened, letting the bouquet press lightly against her hip while tiny beads of water slid off the discarded scraps.

A ribbon spool beside her rocked from the earlier pull, unwound an extra loop, and ticked softly against the counter’s metal chain.

接著她彎曲手腕，將花束滑到紙卷下方，捏住最乾的紙邊。紙在指尖下仍堅挺，但一角已被新水珠拉垂。她把肩膀向前擺動，以緩慢半圈旋轉花束，同時把紙往上推。第三圈時，最後一層與前兩層重疊，三層紙夾緊莖部，形成整齊錐形。荷莉站直，讓花束輕靠在髖骨邊，廢紙上的小水珠滑落。

旁邊的緞帶卷因先前拉動而搖晃，又放出一圈緞帶，金屬鏈輕輕敲在檯面。
