English Original
A faint chalk X, already blurred by spray from the ankle-deep stream, had marked Viola’s first try at dawn.
Earlier, the guide had wheeled a slim trolley topped with a battery amplifier along the floor. The brief electronic beep bounced between the walls like part of a travelling spectacle and faded into watery hush. Viola guessed an ancient philosopher would smile at such a neat mechanism, then stepped aside so her sister Unity could clap. Unity planned to count each echo, and the single stick of chalk in Viola’s pocket would track their positions. From the polished walls came a soft metallic ring that lingered beneath the flowing water like a hidden string.
They stood in the narrow passage where walls almost touched overhead, and overlapping reflections turned Unity’s first clap into a tangled blur. Stream murmur rose from below, adding a low rumble that masked the thinner echoes they wanted to count. To hush the pebbles, Viola dragged a flat sandstone shard from the water. She placed it like a stepping stone in the centre flow; its solid surface swallowed the clatter. Unity stepped onto the slab and clapped again; this time two crisp returns arrived, distinct as twin raindrops on glass. Smiling, Viola drew a bold chalk circle around the spot where Unity stood, using almost half the stick at once. When she pocketed the stub, only a thumb-length remained, and Unity still needed tally marks for twelve more tests.
They shifted farther downstream, repeating the slab trick at three fresh positions, but each relocation demanded another chalk mark on the wall. Whenever they moved too close to the wall, overlapping echoes returned again, so each test demanded careful spacing. By the time the stream bent toward the wind gap, the chalk was a grainy splinter that crumbled between Viola’s fingers. Unity still wanted a final reading, so she offered her counting stick. Viola flattened the remaining chalk dust across the slab itself, turning the whole stone into one broad target. Unity clapped once more; four echoes lined up neatly with the stone edge, matching her counts scratched on the stick. The last trace of chalk slid off the slab with the splash of her departing foot.
Translation
