Only three walnut-sized pieces of dried burlap remained in the fuel tray beside the smoker station. Dale pressed his gloved thumb into the crisp fabric, then slid one piece into the metal canister. The smoker had been packed earlier with pine needles, yet their glow was already fading away. He squeezed the leather bellows in steady rhythm; each pulse sent a ribbon of cool white smoke toward the hive row. Dawn light brushed the meadow, and birds beyond the hedgerow lifted a gentle dawn chorus over the layered hive hum. Despite the effort, the smoke thinned; the column broke apart before reaching the entrance slots. A prickling sensation ran along his forearms as workers clustered near the gap between boxes. He raised the canister higher and widened the squeeze angle, yet the smoke stayed uneven.
Margot stepped from the gear rack, her suit brushing Dale’s elbow, and passed him the final two burlap pieces. A subtle hint of grey edged their fibres where pine soot had rubbed against them. They worked together: Dale tilted the hot canister while Margot fed the burlap, leaving a narrow pocket for air. His shoulders tightened with the added weight, yet the bellows moved noticeably more freely now. Thick smoke rolled upward in a smooth line toward the entrance slots of the hive. A sudden breeze from the flower field tried to destabilize the column, bending it above their helmets instead of forward. Dale pivoted his stance, and Margot angled the nozzle, letting the wind carry the smoke back across the entrance slots. The hum beneath the roof stone dropped a shade, and workers spread into calmer walk lines. Dale placed the smoker on the bench, glove leather warm against the metal; a faint campfire scent drifted among lavender stems.
Translation
