Only a hand-wide sheet of water still skimmed the weir; the earlier broad flow had shrunken to skinny ribbons. Moritz, rubber boots streaked with mud, aimed to keep the wheel turning while sending enough water toward the thirsty garden patch. He stood at the sluice gate junction, fingers curled around the warm notch of the left board. On the wheel side, paddles clapped steadily, and the stick indicator wagged like a slow drum. Meanwhile, water toward the garden drifted shallow and clear, wetting the first stone of the border. A sibling sat nearby, reticent, lowering a marked stick into the outlet and nodding each time the trickle touched another stripe. Moritz guessed he had minutes before the channel fell below the next stripe, so he nudged the board a little wider.
The extra opening sent a short, foamy surge toward the wheel, splashing cold drops against Moritz's sleeves. Still, the paddles refused to spin faster because a clump of amber leaves chose to nestle between two planks. He jogged to the tool area, wet grass slapping his boots, and dragged the rake across the channel. A low joist over the storage roof had been fixed across his line of reach, so he ducked and stepped sideways. With steady swings, the leaf raft loosened, and most fragments drifted downstream in a thin bronze wave. Several scraps twirled straight into a swirling pocket beside the bank, disappearing beneath the surface as though swallowed. His hesitation lasted a breath, then he chose to leave the pocket alone and return before the flow wasted itself. Back at the junction, he lowered the board again, but only halfway, accepting that the garden would drink less.
The wheel turned smoother now, though the indicator stick wobbled with smaller arcs than at dawn. Water that once leapt over every paddle flowed instead in a calmer sheet toward the garden, darkening a narrower band of soil. Moritz wiped a droplet from his chin, then exchanged a quick thumb-up with the still-reticent sibling by the outlet. He had planned to match the morning speed again, yet the channel offered only this gentler rhythm and he let that stand. Beyond the wheel, golden spray hung briefly in sunlight before drifting down as a cool mist over the neatly stacked boards. A quiet patter against wet stone lingered, and the paddles kept their unhurried circle under the late afternoon glow.
Translation
