Cold ceramic grazed Zara’s fingertips as she steadied the white streak plate on the mineral-diagnosis bench. The creek behind her murmured in a broken rhythm, every few seconds adding a hollow gulp when an eddy rolled against the wooden leg of the table. Beside the plate, a single bright flake had been placed on the rough surface; it gave a dry tick when her tweezer tip touched it. She meant to drag the fragment gently, yet the first scratch sang too sharply, and the grain spun away, tapping across the plate before dropping with a tiny plink onto the bench top. Viola, kneeling nearby and counting the number of black magnetite grains left in their pan, paused at the noise. A duck farther downstream began to mess around with pebbles, flipping them and splashing, the clatter echoing across the shallow water.
The same slipping trouble returned when Zara tried again. She angled the tweezer a hair lower and dampened the tip in creek water, hoping the faint film would grip. If she tilted the plate even a degree more, the little shard would glide off once more, so she held her wrist still. Another swirl of wind coaxed a wave against the bank; a droplet leapt, landed on the plate, and the flake skated toward the rim. Viola’s palm arrived in time to block its escape, a silent, sincere move that kept the test alive without a word. This subtle intervene changed the nuance of the streak: the line appeared at last, thin and warm yellow beside the darker mark from earlier. Satisfied with the difference, Zara guided the grain into a water-filled vial, where it drifted like a slow bell tone. From the footbridge a few steps uphill, the entire bench shrank to a pinhead against the broad, whispering ribbon of creek. Only the muted roll of water slipped through the air at that distance.
Translation
