English Original
Griffon tipped the ceramic pitcher and a pale ribbon of batter cascaded onto the hot iron, releasing a sharp, nut-brown scent that mixed with the lighter smell of raw vanilla still floating above the jug. The hiss lasted a single breath; then the surface quieted, and he lifted the pan to swirl the film. Steam carried a buttery fog across the counter, turning the cramped kitchen corner into a brief butter paradise. Inez, lost in thought while chalking the running tally on a slate, missed the moment the swirl slowed. The pan had been heated by the adult only minutes before, yet the fresh pour cooled it quickly and left a thick circle at the centre. Griffon slid the imperfect disc aside, brushed a whisper of melted butter across the metal, and waited until a darker wisp of smoke signalled the regained heat.
The next crêpe landed perfectly and joined five others on the cooling rack, each one drying with a faint caramel smell. Warm air rose toward a narrow alcove above the ingredient shelf, and the sweet plume lured a tiny moth from the shadowed gap. The insect’s jittery flight skimmed Inez’s ear; her quick flinch rocked the rack so the top crêpe slid toward the edge. The sudden motion startled a house gecko nesting behind a loose tile; the reptile darted across the marble slab, its tail brushing the frozen towel and nudging the pastry-cream bowl. Cream sloshed forward with a cold, eggy aroma, threatening to spill. Griffon wedged the offset spatula under the bowl and eased it upright, stopping the chain before a single drop reached the floor. His earlier optimistic estimate of twenty layers now included one extra pause to re-wipe the marble, yet the stack finally rose true and even. By evening, the empty kitchen held a faint sweet haze, and a lone moth traced slow circles beneath the ceiling lamp.
Translation
