Footprints that had been pressed into the lawn at midday now looked pale and shallow as Elsa’s fingers skimmed the oak’s shadow-edge bark. A glare bounced off the shed’s tin roof, so she narrowed her eyes and scanned the hedge corridor, where dusk pooled along the narrow passage. Dry leaves crackled under her shoe, then a drip echoed from the garden tap. She crouched, noticing the tap’s washer hanging loose; the metal shone where earlier water had rubbed it smooth.

When Elsa nudged the handle, a brief surge burst out, splashing her wrist. The water spilled into a sunlit groove beside the herb patch, rolled forward, and vanished beneath a mound of leaves. Moments later a wavering reflection flickered inside the hedge corridor. She pushed branches apart; the gathered leaves had formed a low dam, but liquid seeping through carried a pine cone that bumped a hidden pot. The pot’s dull surface caught the last stripe of light and revealed a gap in the hedge wall wide enough for a small body. A faint fabric smell, cooler than the jasmine scent nearby, drifted from inside the gap and matched a wrinkle in the grass that bent toward it. The clues finally converged.

Elsa reached for an old towel dangling on the fence rail and pressed it against the flowing groove, using her palm to resist the current and slow the water. The soaked cloth darkened, leaving a fresh outline on the plank. Behind the hedge, a quiet laugh slipped through, and a head of tousled hair began to emerge, caught in the web of dim lines still quivering with reflected light. Damp soil now carried a darker streak beside Elsa’s knee, and the towel’s edge dripped steadily onto the packed earth, each drop sliding along the newly carved channel toward the fence post.
