Marks Beneath Fresh Clay- 適合中高級的英語短篇故事

Three neat paw-sized dimples had dried pale on the plank where yesterday's final mud pie cooled. Finn brushed the marks, then tugged the thin rope of the toy pulley to raise a tin pot. The pot swung wide, and the thick clay paste spilled before reaching the drying shelf's center. Even a slight change in tension would misalign the pot, leaving a silver-grey smear across the wood. If the rope slipped again, the pot would crash against the crate below and splash every tool. Finn lowered the dripping pot and wiped his wrist on his sleeve, unconvinced about the pulley idea.

He stepped away toward the bucket station, where the sandy slurry had separated during the warm midday interval. With a long spoon, he churned the liquid from bottom to top until the mixture thickened again. Across the plank, Jude, his mud-play colleague, pressed yellow petals into flat cakes that already showed fine surface cracks. A robin landed near the hose post, tilting its head while droplets from the loose nozzle drummed the puddle. Finn fetched a sieve to filter darker mud from the compost edge, but stubborn twigs jammed the mesh halfway. He knocked the frame against a crate; each strike produced a cold metallic shimmer under the blue-grey light. Once the sieve cleared, he left it on the slanted drying shelf and joined Jude to collect fresh grass strands.

Back at the drying shelf, the rope swung gently; a breeze had nudged the pulley, bringing the tin pot within reach. Finn gripped the rope higher, kept his elbow steady, and lifted; the pot rose straight without the earlier wild arc. Mud slid into the waiting mould exactly at center, covering the mysterious dimples he once mistook for stray spoon taps. A small green frog hopped free from beneath the shelf, its webbed feet matching the pattern now hidden under fresh clay. Meanwhile, Jude in the ingredient garden poured slurry through the cleared sieve. Finn tipped the leaf and the frog slipped into the cool grass.

Finn 掠去這些痕跡，接著拉起玩具滑輪的細繩，想吊起一只錫鍋。

如果繩子再滑一次，鍋子就會撞到下面的箱子，濺得到處都是工具。

Finn 放下滴水的鍋子，用袖子擦擦手腕，對這套滑輪點子仍不太有把握。

他走向放桶的區域，溫暖的午間間歇裡，沙質稀泥已分層沉澱。

他用長湯匙從底往上攪動，直到混合物再次變濃。

另一邊，玩泥同伴 Jude 把黃色花瓣壓進扁平泥餅，細小裂紋已在表面浮現。

一隻知更鳥落在水管柱旁歪頭觀察，鬆動噴嘴的水珠敲打水窪。

Finn 拿起篩網想把堆肥邊較黑的泥過濾，頑固的細枝卻在半途卡住網孔。

他把框敲在木箱上，每一下都在藍灰光中閃出冷冽微光。

篩網終於暢通，他把它放在傾斜的晾架上，跟著 Jude 去採新鮮草絲。

回到晾架時，微風推著繩子晃動，滑輪把錫鍋送到手邊。

Finn 抓高繩子，肘部穩定發力，鍋子不再狂擺而是筆直上升。

泥漿正好倒進中央的模具，覆蓋了先前被誤認為湯匙痕的印點。

一隻小青蛙從架下跳出，它腳掌的形狀和那些痕跡完全相符。

同時，Ingredient Garden 裡的 Jude 把稀泥順暢倒過已清好的篩網。

Finn 斜舉葉片，青蛙便溜進涼爽的草叢。
