The pad of dust thickened near a snagged felt pad, so he crouched to carve out the curled strip with a fingernail. Halfway through the sweep, a dull bump echoed from the hallway; the wardrobe’s heavy door stuck against the skirting board again. A voice said extra hands could slide it clear, and the siblings left the room, brushes and cloths abandoned on the boards. They had lifted that weight before, so the timber edge rose smoothly after a short shove. When Forrest returned, the sunbeam across the desk had shifted; its warmer half no longer touched the cloth he’d left unfolded. Dry air had stiffened the top layer; the fabric now held a shallow dimensional ripple where moisture once let it drape. While he wrung the cloth, the broom’s loose bristles scratched the floor and startled a tiny spider beneath the bed rail. The spider raced toward Ada’s shoe; her sudden hop tipped the bucket and a silver sheet sloshed across the boards. The spill slid along old grooves, narrowing as it advanced until Forrest pressed a rolled towel down to block its edge. Ada let out a quick laugh and lifted the ruler again, amused to find the puddle exactly forty-one centimetres long. They soaked most of the water, yet the bucket now held only a shallow crescent that rocked whenever Forrest shifted weight. He swept the refreshed cloth over the last pale plank; the final drop slid from the fibres and rolled toward the towel.
