He and Emmet were meant to finish maintenance before the boat rose, yet the windlass still groaned with stubborn friction each time they tried. Max had noticed earlier that the iron socket had been polished bright by other crews, but the teeth underneath stayed dull and rough. He cupped the tin in both palms, warming it against his ribs; at this juncture the sun pressed on the metal lid as well, and the mixture loosened further. Together they brushed the softened grease inside the socket until the handle turned with a smooth swing. A low rush echoed through the chamber, eddies widened, and the rope around the nearest bollard creaked tight as the water began its steady climb.

Emmet stepped back to push the heavy balance beam closed once levels matched, yet his shoe skated over the patch where the last drop had fallen. The beam stuck half-way, the chamber surface tilted, and the bow of the narrowboat listed toward the slimy wall; hemp fibres rasped against iron while Max steadied the line. "If that cloth slips again, the gate will stay open," Emmet muttered, bracing his stance. Max tore the single remaining rag from the box, showing quiet discipline as he wiped the greasy strip clean, then folded the final dry corner under Emmet’s sole for extra grip. The sun continued to heat the timber, but the wiped strip stayed matte, and the second shove sent the gate home with a firm knock. Water stopped swirling, outcome secured, and the rope slackened. The very last thread of the rag fluttered loose and dropped into the slow green current, spinning toward the downstream shadow.
