The clipboard’s metal clip gaped wide, but every pen in the cup lay capless and silent. Yara pressed her forearm against the form-filling table, steadied the thin board against her ribs, and began shaping her first signature with the last working pen. Ink thinned halfway through the curve; the line broke, and the pen’s tip scraped like chalk on tile. She rolled the barrel between her fingers, yet only a faint wobble travelled from nib to wrist. The queue display clicked to the next number; rubber soles shuffled behind her. She swapped in a second pen and pushed down harder. The loose nib shifted sideways, leaving a zigzag rather than a letter. The half-signed sheet, already folded twice, now showed an edge that carried a rough shear through the cardboard ticket beneath it. The upper corner of the form had been stamped already by reception. Goal one—to finish the form—hung there, unmoved, while her father, seated nearby, turned a magazine page without looking up.

A cough from the pharmacy window broke Yara’s brief reverie; the label printer had stopped mid-chatter, and a ribbon of paper sagged between its rollers. People near the glass adjusted their stance, the jam becoming another hurdle in the clinic’s slow rhythm. If she had kept searching for fresh ink, the queue would have stretched past the entrance before any labels reached the counter. Instead, she unscrewed the empty pen, slid the clear barrel free, and stepped beside the printer. The technician nodded once and moved aside. The hollow tube slipped neatly under the curled edge of the trapped strip, allowing her wrist to press forward with a steady, low pull. Paper and plastic did not interact smoothly at first; tension built, then released, and the bundle of labels fell onto the tray. Fresh numbers rolled out, straightening like train cars. Yara caught the first clean strip while the technician pinched the crumpled off-centre printout. She folded her portion, and the technician dropped his into a recycling bin.

Translation
