Judson flipped the blue mould, and a dense brick thudded onto the wall; a round sparrow skidded across its top, scattering loose crumbs of snow. Damp wool pressed against his mouth, and every breath pushed out a sour-sweet puff that mixed with the clean mineral bite of falling flakes.

He steadied the brick inside the fort interior, where the stomped floor already smelled chalky from crushed ice. Two new blocks rise above the row like squat towers, their inner strength locked in by quick palms and a splash of bucket water that steamed with an earthy iron tang before freezing. The half circle offered a narrow sanctuary from the drifting snow, yet the bird kept fluttering along the rim. Snow puffed upward like a white anemone whenever it hopped. Etta, packing more snow near the fence bank, called, “My side leans outward.” Her voice carried a wool-damp smell of scarf and breath.

A sudden clank snapped through the yard; the metal shovel had slid, striking the porch rail. Judson hurried across the brick-moulding zone, boots releasing a vinegar-sharp squeak at each step. He propped the shovel upright, brushed fresh flakes from the bucket, and noticed a thin film of ice that had already glazed the surface. While he worked, the sparrow darted toward the porch light and vanished behind a gutter.

By the time he trudged back, the wall top looked different. Tiny pits dotted the newest bricks, and a faint nutty odour drifted from seeds the bird had pecked loose inside each dent. He crouched, traced one hollow with a glove, and understood that the bird had not searched for warmth; it had mined the softest snow for hidden grains dropped during earlier lunches. Accepting the change, he lifted a spare brick and shaved it into a shallow step beside the entrance gap, leaving the seed-specked surface untouched so the sparrow could feed there. Snow settled onto the new ledge, dimpling its edge.
