The branch lay silent beside the fence, but pebbles along the path rattled whenever the breeze turned. Nadia sorted bulbs in a shallow tray nearby, the faint clink of pottery marking her steady rhythm. Eve knelt at the flower bed and tapped the round stone; the grinding echo spread through the wet soil. She had already loosened a ring of soil around the stone, and faint clods thudded when she brushed them aside. She hoped to move it into the waiting hole before breakfast, so she dragged the long branch forward. The branch, their chosen instrument, creaked as Jonas wedged a flat rock beneath it to enhance its lift. They pressed together; gravel shifted, birdsong paused, yet the stone answered with only a muffled groan and stayed still. Water seeped under the fulcrum, and the rock sank a finger-width, ruining the first outcome of their effort.
Jonas leaned back, the plank tapping the fence like a slow drum, while Eve inspected the muddy dent around the support. A single robin call repeated, then the quiet between notes let them hear water dripping from the garden tap. She slid a second flat stone onto the first to augment the height, tiny grains crunching under the new layer. The wooden plank had been balanced over the stack, yet Eve now turned it ninety degrees to spread the weight wider. "Push slowly," Jonas said, his voice steady, and both ends of the branch squeaked against bark and stone together. This time the stone shifted; a harsh scrape rang out, and the cavity beneath collapsed, tilting the stone toward the puddle. Cold water splashed onto their boots, surprising them, yet the branch held firm, and the stone now leaned free of the hole.
They rested the branch on the gravel, listening to the lingering resonance of the scrape fade into distant hedge rustle. The result was partial; the stone still touched the bed, yet a clear gap shone under one rounded edge. Eve hoped to finish later, but for now she scooped thick soil into the exposed space, coarse grains pattering like dry seeds. Jonas slid the branch aside with a short metallic rasp where bark met the spade that had been leaning nearby. Eve and Jonas paced toward the tool corner; behind them the tap kept dripping, each drop beating the puddle in slow rhythm.
Translation
