Story Content
English Original
Five berry boxes sat in the cooled tray; empty gaps showed where others had already been lifted away. Nina aimed to choose a clamshell before the warmth under the canvas awning softened the fruit, so she reached for the front-left box. The lid had been sealed by a tight plastic hinge, and fine condensation blurred the berries like frosted glass. She tilted the container toward the awning’s amber light, but glare bounced from the wet surface and masked every seed. The vendor’s spritz bottle hissed nearby, adding fresh droplets that only deepened the fog, a subtle change that felt frustrating when she tried to inspect the colour. A passerby offered a quick remark about the day’s heat, then moved on, leaving Nina bent over the tray again. Her tenacity showed in the way she shifted her grip and waited, counting three slow breaths before setting the box upright.
The water inside still clung to the plastic, so Nina adjusted her timing instead of her method. She slipped the container into the deeper shade beside the hanging brass scale and held it there, letting cooler air alleviate the mist. After several heartbeats, clear windows opened across the lid, and a bright caramel glow revealed plump upper berries. Yet the surprise came when she raised the corner a little higher: a hairline crack crossed the bottom, and a bead of juice traced her thumb, proof that the lower layer had pressed too hard during transport. She returned the box and chose another using the same shaded pause, this time without lifting it high. Paper rustled as her sibling near the path steadied the shopping bag. Nina carried the sound box to the weighing station, and the chain on the scale clicked once before stilling. The tray that had shown five boxes at the start now displayed only two, their lids drying under the warmer light while the vendor’s spritz bottle rested.
Translation
