Yet the surprise came when she raised the corner a little higher: a hairline crack crossed the bottom, and a bead of juice traced her thumb, proof that the lower layer had pressed too hard during transport. She returned the box and chose another using the same shaded pause, this time without lifting it high. Paper rustled as her sibling near the path steadied the shopping bag. Nina carried the sound box to the weighing station, and the chain on the scale clicked once before stilling. The tray that had shown five boxes at the start now displayed only two, their lids drying under the warmer light while the vendor’s spritz bottle rested.
