Elise gripped the cracked plastic mould and pulled upward. A cold ribbon of seawater slid off its blue-grey wall, and the tower underneath sagged where the rim’s long split had stamped a jagged groove. Theo had pressed the bucket into the moat channel, hoping for a smooth cylinder that could guard the seaward side of their castle. A sandy dog padded near their ankles, sniffing at the damp trench while a quartet of gulls circled above, their wings flashing frost-white against the sky. Beyond the ribbon of dark seaweed, a boy on a unicycle wobbled along the boardwalk, and a beachside tinkerer adjusted a polished telescope aimed at the horizon. Elise tried smoothing the damaged tower with the wooden stick, yet the wet grains crumbled and slid away before her second pass.

Another shallow wave hissed forward, reached farther than the last, and undercut the moat wall opposite the tower. Water pooled quickly; the trench threatened to overflow. Elise hurried inland for the water bucket, but a gust blew loose, dry sand across the wet surface, leaving a crumbly layer that refused to pack. Theo bent to study the useless mould still in his hand. Through the split rim, a thin stream dripped—steady, controlled, and narrow, like liquid through a neat funnel. He raised his eyebrows; Elise’s eyes widened in answer. Together they filled the cracked bucket at the water station, carried it back, and tipped it over the moat. The split channelled the flow in a precise ribbon that washed the dry crumble away without collapsing the wall. They repeated the tilt, guiding each pour at a different spot until the trench held an even, shining band and the tower’s base sat firm.

A final surge slid in, met the reinforced moat, and settled without reaching the castle. Theo kept the up-turned bucket, its controlled stream still dripping silver drops, while Elise balanced a shell ramp they had shaped with that stream. Both objects gleamed under the pale afternoon light as the tide inched forward and paused.

最後一波浪滑入，碰到加固的護城河後停住，未觸及沙堡。西奧握著翻倒的桶子，裂縫仍滴著銀亮水珠；伊莉絲捧著用那股水塑成的貝殼斜坡。兩件物品在蒼白午後光線下閃亮，潮水緩緩前移片刻後靜止。
