The awl’s rhythm grew faltering when the cobbler leaned to adjust thread tension, and the brief hush let a muffled creak escape the cubbyhole wall. Tobias reached up on tiptoe to tug his freshly glued heel from a swollen slot, yet the shoe refused, wood edges gripping it. Keane peeled the glued end away, tearing the strip so that two shorter pieces rustled apart. Tobias rotated the folding table, holding his shoe steady while Keane stroked the torn edge against the sneaker sole; fine powder pattered like rain on cardboard. They swapped pieces without a word, rhythm matching the steady hum that returned above them.
