"Steady, basket, don't tip yet," Callum whispered while gripping its rim with both hands. The wicker ribs pushed back, rough and springy against his palms and the cloth of his sleeve. His grandparent rested on a bench nearby, shelling peas into a tin and humming a slow tune. Twelve apples would match the hanging measure he had checked earlier, and only nine rested inside so far. He lifted the short ladder, its warm rails prickly, and planted it under a branch dusted with red. One twist freed a plump apple; its skin felt taut and slightly sticky near the stem. A second fruit followed, yet the third had been hidden behind clustered leaves and rocked whenever breeze drifted through. Callum grabbed wooden tongs from the basket edge, their ridged jaws gripping the stem, and scooped the stubborn apple down.
He wiped palms on trousers; midday heat had turned the ladder’s top rung almost hot-to-touch, leaving a faint tingling across fingertips. That warmth, creeping through the metal nails, loosened a tiny wedge beneath the table boards several rows away. The swollen boards spread; their tilt nudged one earlier apple from “ripe” to “almost” with a soft clack. The rolling apple tapped a second, which slid forward and scattered coriander leaves resting nearby. From the ladder top Callum heard nothing, yet movement at the gate caught his eye: fruit wobbling toward the grass. He jogged across the row, basket swaying, and wedged the broad handle of his tongs beneath the lifted board like a lever. The cool metal countered the expansion, dropping the surface flush again; the runaway apples stopped short of the edge.
Back beneath the branches, he lifted the basket, noticing the wicker floor sagging more heavily against his wrist. If the basket grew any heavier, carrying it back later would surely strain his arms. He added the twelfth apple, chilled by shade, and walked the narrow aisles toward the table. When the load settled on the hanging measure, the pointer swung past the red line with a crisp flick. The board shift, he noticed, did not pertain to weight, only to the afternoon heat warming the planks. A stray coriander stem nudged over by the earlier spill now balanced on the basket rim, perfuming the air with bright spice. Its fine leaves fluttered softly, brushing circles above the polished apple crowns as Callum turned toward the gate.
Translation
