English Original
Only four spoonfuls of pale batter clung to the ceramic pitcher when Britt tilted it above the black pan; the hiss lasted a single sharp second, then the kitchen filled with a nut-sweet mist. Nineteen cooled crêpes already lay on the wire rack, and Neve kept a dusty chalk tally on a small board balanced beside them. Britt reached for the birch spatula whose gnarled handle carried a faint earthy smell. Earlier, that rough handle had dragged thick ribbons of pastry cream across the top layer and left uneven ridges, so she had tried smoothing with the metal blade instead, yet the metal warmed too quickly and the cream slid again.
While the twentieth disc set, a warm column of smoky butter scent drifted toward the open window and a moth fluttered through the slice of sunshine that striped the counter. Its wings beat in quick, vinegar-sharp bursts against the wire rack. Startled sugar ants that had gathered under the board scattered across Neve’s chalk lines; the sudden rustle made Neve bump the rack, and the top crêpe began to slide toward the floor. Britt’s chest tightened. She caught the rack corner, but her grip felt slick with floury residue. In the same movement she noticed the rough spatula still resting nearby: the very ridges that had ruined her spreading created friction. She wedged the gnarled handle under the rack like a small brace, and the wood’s coarse knots bit into the wire, halting the glide. With both hands free, Britt pressed the leaning cake back into centre; the spatula stayed lodged, keeping their mutual project steady.
Hours later, pale evening light slanted through the empty kitchen. Chalk dust lay settled around the abandoned board, and the birch spatula remained hooked under the rack. By evening, one slow band of cooling air drifted above the layered cake and curled toward the window.
