Every afternoon Barrett slid the sealed terrarium closer to the sunlit edge of the shelf and listened for the faint tick of falling water. Today, the jar felt a shade heavier in his grasp, and silence replaced the usual rhythmic drip. Condensation still frosted the curved glass, yet no droplet hurried down the wall where the moss waited. He rotated the vessel a quarter turn, expecting the sound to resume; nothing answered. The afternoon light painted a bright oval on the surface, warping the view so the trailing fig seemed to bend twice.
Hardly had he set the jar down when Hattie pushed open the door, the shelf giving a dry creak beneath her elbow. She peered at the motionless moss, then at Barrett. “Looks quieter today,” she said, voice lowered as if any louder tone might upset the enclosed equilibrium. Barrett tapped the glass lightly; a print bloomed and faded, yet no drop broke loose. “Did you move it earlier?” he asked, lifting the bright side toward her. She shook her head, eyes following a single bubble trapped against the gravel layer.
His fingertips still chilled from the glass, he crouched to align his gaze with the bracket that fixed the wooden shelf to the wall. A single brass rivet, once flush, now protruded, tilting the plank a whisper toward the window. That slight lean altered the balance of warmth inside the jar, skewing the silent equation of evaporation and return. Barrett paused, thumb on the cool metal; moving the shelf back might restore the drip, yet the fragile garden had adapted overnight. Condensation striped the rear wall instead, feeding moss patches previously stunted in shadow. He straightened, letting the idea settle without speaking.
Instead of hammering the rivet flat, Barrett slipped two fingers under the jar and nudged it toward the darker side. Water beads trembled, then one released, tapping the moss where light rarely reached. He and Hattie watched, breath held, as a second drop followed the first, tracing a fresh path that glittered green at its end. Without a word, Barrett left the jar angled in its new position, and the shelf’s faint creak subsided into stillness. Down in the miniature forest, a tiny frond quivered, catching the shifted light like a key suddenly turned.
