Cruz eased the heavy sliding door aside, the metal rollers clicking once before the slab settled back, and stepped from cool morning air onto the sand floor. Heat wafted in slow waves from the brick furnace he knew as well as the lines on his palm. Yet the far corner, where another workstation had always crowded the aisle, lay clear except for a single dark print in the sand. A faint pulse of orange light climbed the rafters, catching motes that drifted in widening spirals. Seldom had the furnace seemed so loud: every dull roar echoed against the newly opened space as though measuring the gap. Cruz lifted the oak mold half from its rack, then stopped, his eyes tracing the empty bolts that once clamped a second frame beside it.
He set the mold on the bench and ran a finger along the channel network he had carved last week, testing the firmness of the damp sand. To optimize the flow he had widened the sprue. Yet a fine seam now crossed the runner as though someone else, working in haste, had pressed a tool at the wrong angle. "Odd switch," he murmured, the words lost in the furnace breath. Only a tactician would have moved that branch by a thumb-width; the alteration would let metal climb higher, forming a narrow pinnacle before it filled the cavity. Across the aisle, an earthen amphora rested on its side, its shoulder dusted with fresh grit that had not been there yesterday. He crouched, sand still clinging to his boots, and rotated the vessel; a trickle of water escaped the cracked lip and vanished before it touched the furnace heat.
It was the unmarked hook above the pouring pit that finally rooted him there. Without the second crucible hanging there, the chain gently oscillated in a measured, pendulum-like arc. Every swing revealed a brighter band on the brick behind it—sunlight that must have slipped through the roof seam for years yet never caught his notice. Cruz reached up, halted the motion, then let the links run again; the whole shed seemed to breathe in that slow rhythm. If the roof were lower, the beam would forbid such movement, and the hook would stay still. He brushed stray sand from the mold, replaced it on the rack, and, after a pause that outlasted three furnace breaths, rolled the door open. A worn wire brush lay near the threshold, its bristles thinned to silver stubble, and he stepped around it into the glare outside.
Translation
