Lyle stepped to the largest drum and pressed a palm against the cowhide; warmth lingered, a keepsake left by yesterday’s vibrations. Hardly had his skin met the surface when he paused, tracing the shallow dents that formed an uneven crescent near the rim. Each mark carried a faint sheen where sweat and rosin had mixed, then dried, creating a fragile varnish that caught lamplight like propolis on hive walls. Bachi lowered, he crouched, eye level with the drum’s barrel, and the stage disclosed further wear: lacquer rubbed pale by repeated hip turns. He returned the drum to position, set the guardian upright, and let the sticks rest across the head without striking.
