Every afternoon, the wooden frame rested against the vat’s rim, its bronze-colored mesh shining with clouded water. Today, a faint metallic tang grazed the air around it. Poppy slipped in beside the stone trough, licking a droplet that had landed on her lip. The taste registered sharper than the usual chalky broth. Rows of damp sheets swayed overhead like pale banners, dripping quiet bitterness onto the gutter below. The beater thumped steadily, yet the pulp inside showed a darker seam curling near the surface. She noted the first difference and slid the frame into the vat, letting the slurry lap over her knuckles.
Hardly had she shaken the frame twice when a slate mote drifted free, leaving a streak the color of river clay across the settling fibers. The air tasted of penny coins, and the grit dotted her tongue like fine pepper. Luke, pressing sheets nearby, glanced over and murmured, “Odd shade,” before returning to his stack. Poppy lifted the frame higher; her sleeves already damp, she watched an accretion of surplus pulp gather at the left corner, thick enough to tilt the surface. She hesitated, then drew a fingertip along the mesh, pushing the creamy mound back toward the center until the layer leveled.
At the moment the layer cleared, a second streak appeared. Flecks of tiny, square crystals glinted under the overhead skylight. She tasted the air again; a briny edge now lingered, as though distant sea spray had found the loft. If the vat were deeper, the cloud might have spread unseen, yet here it collected in slow dispersal across the mesh. Poppy angled the frame, and at that juncture the clay tint resolved into a muted green, the crystals dissolving like salt on her tongue. Only then did she notice the beater stones: one carried a new tectonic scratch, thin but unmistakable, betraying where mineral pigment had scraped loose.
She considered setting the sheet aside, half-formed and flawed, yet the shifting color kept her bent over the vat a moment longer. Water continued dripping from the overhead sheets, each drop landing with a mellow, almost sweet aftertaste when it touched her lips. All she could measure was the delicate balance between keeping the unexpected hue and tearing the fragile mat. So she steadied her grip, pressed the deckle gently against the vat edge to drain the last film of water, and walked toward the drying rack. Poppy eased the wooden frame onto the rack, its mesh now glazed with a pale mossy tint that waited to dry.
Translation
