From the hallway threshold, Oona watched Vernon tilt his head toward the open piano, the tuning fork humming faintly between his fingers. Afternoon light slid along the stretched steel like liquid silver, and the higher register sounded brighter than this room had ever carried. Steel glinted like sugar threads, while the air tasted faintly metallic, a lingering aftertaste on her tongue. She stepped inside, soles whispering across polished boards. Vernon lifted the fork, moved aside, and tapped the bench edge. “When you like,” he murmured; the invitation floated, light as chalk dust.
Lever in hand, Oona pressed a rubber mute between neighboring strings and struck the key, tasting the dry bitterness that drifted from the felt. Two waves collided inside the soundboard, producing beats that pulsed like a distant engine. Another fractional twist sent the note first sharp, then flat, the beats spinning faster despite her careful breath. Forearm tight, she let the lever hover, then placed it on the bench with a faint click. Only the unresolved shimmer lingered in the room. Dust settled on her lips, leaving a chalky taste she tried to ignore.
She crossed to a side table where a glass pot held yesterday’s water, a single dried citrus blossom floating like a muted lantern. One sip painted her tongue with mellow sweetness that turned quickly sour, a gustatory ripple she swallowed without thinking. Small rings spread across the pot’s surface, ephemeral circles meeting, merging, and slowing until they hung motionless. Perseverance surfaced in that gradual settling, and steadfastness in the blossom that refused to sink. Behind her, Vernon tested the stubborn key again; the beats dissolved into unwavering purity at the very moment the last ripple disappeared.
Returning, she fitted the mute once more, nudged the pin by scarcely a hair’s breadth, and the string aligned with its twin without a visible shiver. She rested the lever flat on the felt, flexed her fingers, and stepped back from the keyboard. Across the room the clock’s brass pendulum kept swinging, indifferent, bright flashes riding its arc while the tuned note rang on. Oona stayed still, lips carrying a ghost of citrus, as the steady pendulum swallowed the afternoon in equal slices. Somewhere inside the case, a hum of connected strings continued to breathe, quieter than speech yet constant.
