The Missing Tack in the Lacquer Tray-

English Original
A brass upholstery tack lay in the humidity tray, shining between the slow drips as though moisture itself had forged it there. Kit crouched, gloved fingers hovering above the clay, then he straightened instead, letting the tack rest while his gaze climbed to the turning stand. The cedar tray he lacquered for an unseen benefactor revolved with quiet reluctance; a faint ridge broke the glassy surface, catching the north light like an unwanted wrinkle. He steadied the stand, listening to the hinge creak, and noticed a jar of quince marmalade abandoned on the shelf, its lid resting askew over sticky threads.
Bram, the upholsterer who rented the back corner, worked a stripped oak chair, pressing horsehair into the seat with a blunt needle that left gentle dimples in the linen. Each time the mallet tapped, a dull thud rippled through the humid air, mixing with the citrus sweetness escaping the marmalade jar. To keep rhythm, he counted under his breath, unaware that one missing tack had wandered across the room and found the water tray. Kit called across the panels, “Nearly finished there, Bram?” while his elbow nudged the curing cabinet door and stirred a faint resin scent.
Kit lifted a cotton pad, sprinkled whetstone dust, then paused; removing the ridge demanded another sanding pass, yet every extra stroke threatened to thin the earlier layers. He weighed the pad in his palm, set it down, picked it up again, and finally exhaled through pursed lips before touching the surface. A single sweep darkened the ridge, revealing a scratch beneath that curved like a forgotten hieroglyph, slender yet unmistakable beneath the translucent depth. He fetched a slender bamboo skewer—his improvised tool—tilted the tray, and traced the scratch, testing whether new lacquer could drown its presence.
Bram’s mallet fell silent; he noticed Kit’s hunched shoulders and walked over, wiping linseed residue from his thumbs onto a rag already peppered with resin stains. “Stray tack did that, do you think?” he murmured, tracing air above the mark but never touching the gleaming finish. Kit showed the skewer’s lacquered tip; the liquid gathered along the groove, light pooling deeper than before, turning the flaw into a deliberate line. Behind them, the jar dripped a slow bead onto the shelf; the rag under Bram’s palm soaked it, the stain glowing under the north window.
Translation
