Oswin arrived, rolling his sleeves higher, and lifted a smaller wand as if the missing rig had never existed. Soap film stretched across the narrow loop, already shivering; surface colors slid over it like river turbulence caught in miniature. “Thin one today,” he noted, offering Wanda the handle while residual droplets sparked on his knuckles. She accepted, then paused to contemplate the space her elbows now had; the routine alignment of bodies felt quietly perturbed. Breath held short, she drew the wand forward; the bubble inflated, wobbled, and slipped away, much smaller than memory allowed.

A second attempt followed, this time Wanda pressed two slim wands together, their handles crossing like chopsticks. The twin films met, fused, and began to writhe, twisting ribbons of color that folded over each other in quick spirals. For a heartbeat the shape held, larger than either wand promised, then detached and drifted above the toddlers' outstretched palms. It burst against a maple leaf, misting the air; Oswin laughed once, but Wanda set the wands down without comment.

She stepped back to the trough, noticing how the afternoon sun painted a thin crust of dried soap along its wooden rim. That crust flaked under her thumb, tasting chalky and faintly bitter, nothing like the gentle sweetness still floating on the breeze. The vacant hook glimmered beside the flakes, untouched; droplets landed there from other wands, slid downward, and vanished into the basin. Wanda leaned closer, the mineral tang rising again, and watched one droplet hesitate on the rim before falling through the same narrow gap. The trough sat unchanged, yet the gap gleamed brighter than any bubble still gliding over the grass.
