Adele’s fingers closed around the metal scoop and tipped its sugar into the drum before thought caught up. The motor answered with a higher pitch, a neat indicator of load she had learned long ago. She lifted a paper cone, rotated it in slow arcs, hunting an even curtain of filaments. Instead, the sugar clung in lumpy ridges, collapsing under its own weight and leaving bare cardboard at the center. She adjusted the cone’s angle, waited for the threads, and still the ridges broke apart in scraps. A breath rode out between her teeth, tasting of caramelized sugar and the faint winter air skating along the lane.
She let the cone rest against the tray and moved toward the side counter where Wyatt guarded a steaming casserole fresh from the baking tent. Wyatt balanced an empty cone on one fingertip and murmured, “Crowd’s growing faster than dusk tonight.” The dish’s ceramic rim pressed warm against her palm while she slid a wooden board beneath for support. No official stood watching, though a visiting sugar-art instructor lingered nearby, noting textures with silent eyes rather than instructions. A low bellow from the distant ride speakers drifted across the gravel, vibrating the foil that tented the casserole’s crust. She flattened the foil, smoothing wrinkles until its surface shone, and the motion settled the tension lodged in her wrist. Nearby, melted chocolate cooled on marble for a tempering demonstration, its sheen mirroring the silver in her hands.
While she arranged napkins beside Wyatt, the cart’s motor shifted; a subtle variance in the hum threaded through the evening noise. The new note, softer and steadier, traveled along her forearm like the marble’s earlier coolness, stopping her mid-reach. She rotated the casserole to fit a narrower shelf, and the quiet circle her hands traced echoed the rotation her cone had lacked. For a moment she stood still, palm flat on the cooling lid, listening to sugar whisper against metal behind her. Wyatt tilted his head, yet said nothing, the fair’s lights painting shallow gleams across both their sleeves.
Adele stepped back to the drum, lifted the same cone, and this time lowered it into the circling threads at half the earlier speed. The filaments settled evenly, forming translucent layers that thickened without sagging, as Wyatt balanced another cone beside the casserole. He offered a quiet grin, the music flaring behind them, yet her attention rested on the gentle alignment between wrist and drum. Her wrist traced the same circle, smaller now, and sugar met paper with a softened hush like fresh snow landing on cloth.
Translation
