No metronome tick drifted through the parlour when Fintan propped the lid, exposing a city of strings and felt. The wall clock near the window released its patient clicks, two each second, spacious and unhurried. A muted musing rose where two neighboring strings disagreed, fluttering between ceiling and floor. He wedged a dull-green rubber mute between two copper-wound strings and pressed middle A. A faint shiver climbed the key into his palm before the pitch reached his ear. He tapped the tuning fork against his knee; its thin resonance hung above the hammers before dissolving. The tuning lever waited, angled like a slender hawk of oak and steel above the crowded stringfield. Afternoon light slid along the wire rows without a ripple, turning each into a silver reed.
Across the carpet, Felix unpacked lunch from a glazed stone receptacle meant for soup, yet now crowded with seaside leftovers. On the cloth napkin, a sliver of mackerel glistened beside a darker slice of barracuda. A small fillet of flounder lay folded beneath waxed paper; salt and oil scented the still air. The brass clock near the window held its stately double-click, unwavering through the room. Meanwhile, Felix’s spoon tapped faster against porcelain, its bright percussion bouncing between bookcase and lid. Fintan’s fingers paused above the lever, their skin remembering that tuning relied on quiet. He glanced toward Felix, but said nothing; the spooning continued there, bright and unsyncopated. "Still working on that note?" Felix murmured across the carpet, not quite meeting his eyes. The two tempos ignored each other within the narrow room, at least for now.
Half an hour later, the spoon rested, yet another rhythm emerged: a heating pipe under the floor released a periodic creak, three seconds apart. Fintan worked on the final string of the octave; its beat fluttered quicker than the pipe’s groan, so the sounds crossed without touching. He twisted the lever a quarter turn, let the string ring, then tried again after one pulse. Suddenly the creak lengthened, settling on the same interval as the remaining beat, and the room pulsed as though walls inhaled. Startled by the sudden union, Fintan lifted his gaze, then shut his eyes. Instead of listening, he let the vibration travel up through the key and into his wrist, searching for absolute stillness there.
Within a single breath the wavering beats vanished, leaving only the joined tone and the pipe’s softened moan filling the room together. Fintan opened his eyes, exhaled, removed the mute, and brushed tiny felt crumbs from the dark spruce beyond the hammers. Across the carpet, Felix noticed the hush and set his spoon aside; chilled fish scent still curled around the lunch container. Fintan reached for the fork again; this time his knuckle touched the piano cheek in a slower, almost tentative arc before releasing the metal. The fork sang, softer than its first strike, and the note slipped into the tuned string smoothly enough that the clock waited one heartbeat before clicking on.
