Liora pinched a glowing hinge between long tongs, laid it across the anvil face, and tapped a cross-peen in the practiced tempo one-and-two, one-and-two. “Hold your line,” she uttered to the bar, yet the metal bent again. The bar twisted off center every time the downbeat landed; each misalignment pressed fresh scale under her knuckle and left a faint sting. She paused, rolled that knuckle against her apron, and tried to knuckle down, delivering heavier strokes that rang but somehow lacked the usual brightness. An utter hush followed the final blow, a mute echo where the anvil normally answered. Something familiar stood absent, yet the piece still refused a true line.

She quenched the crooked hinge; steam beat against the rafters in short, rhythmic bursts. The task felt stalled, so she set hammer and tongs on the stump and walked out to the side yard where rinse water dripped from a cracked pitcher onto beaten earth, marking a steady cadence: plink-pause-plink. A raccoon had passed during the night; its paw prints punctuated the damp soil in alternating pairs, mirroring the water’s pulse. Liora crouched, flexed each finger, then cracked the sore knuckle with a soft pop that fell right between drips. Her gaze traced the staggered impressions again—left, right, left, right—remarkable for their tidy spacing, almost as though the animal marched to the forge rhythm she thought she controlled.

The pattern echoed through her thoughts, and without deciding she stepped back inside. The fire still glowed, yet the forge sounded different; the usual high overtone was missing from the room’s layered cadence. Liora lifted the hinge blank, set it aside, and ran the flat of the hammer across the anvil face. A slight trough near the heel interrupted the glide, shallow but wide enough to dull the rebound. She flipped the stump wedge that had always braced that corner—gone, perhaps kicked loose during sweeping. The raccoon tracks resurfaced in her mind: pairs, then gap, then pairs. The interval matched the dent; the missing wedge made the anvil skip its own beat. She stopped moving, bellows idle.

Liora brushed coal dust from her palms, hung the leather apron on a peg, and walked toward the open door, leaving the hinge cooling to black on the stump.

The hammer rested across the anvil; its head leaned into the slight trough. Ash settled in a gradual layer over the hinge until its edges disappeared. Beside the stump, the orphan wedge lay on its side, its grain shining where fresh oak met iron.
