Thea’s wrist turned the brass vent crank a fraction, muscle memory working before thought arrived. Warm, damp air pressed against her cheeks while the thin click of metal faded into leaves brushing her shoulders. Young sedge stems leaned sideways in their pot, needing a sling before tomorrow’s sun lifted them further. She looped, pulled, and slipped, yet every second stitch snagged where the twine split into stubborn fibers. More tension only roughened the strand, raising bristles that caught the hook again. A clay moose sat on the shelf beside her elbow, its antlers chipped from seasons of minor collisions; she tapped it once and watched dust plume. Beyond it, a potted thistle held beads of moisture between the spines, the droplets quivering like glass beads. Her fingers paused; the hook hung mid-air. Miles stepped between cucumber vines, paused, and offered a quiet “Need anything?” before moving lightly on.

She laid the half-made sling aside and reached for the watering can instead, letting routine carry her away from the awkward yarn. Water darkened the soil around tomatoes, then slipped along the stone floor in a slow ribbon that cooled her bare ankles. A whisper of drier air skimmed through the rafters when the vent loosened further, bending the flame of a hanging thermometer. She wiped condensation from a pane with a rag, and the rag’s wet loops folded over her fingers in the same rhythm the yarn had refused. Her eyes drifted closed; her thumb traced the soft pattern once, then again, slower.

Back at the bench she lifted the jute, but this time she let sight fall away and worked by the tug and give between finger and hook. Loops slipped through smoothly; the stubborn split no longer dictated the rhythm. As the sling grew, the same butterfly that had been circling earlier perched on the clay moose, its wings tilting just enough to rock the figurine. Dust rippled across the bench, settled, and the tiny sculpture stayed leaning, its uneven stance echoing her earlier uncertainty. Her thumb hovered above the next empty loop, the coarse fiber resting against her open palm.

她把尚未完成的吊帶放下，改抓灑水壺，讓日常動作帶自己離開難纏的麻線。水將番茄泥土染深，接著沿石板鋪開一條慢慢散涼的細流，潤到裸足腳踝。一縷較乾的氣息從椽上掠過，通風窗再度鬆動時晃動了吊掛溫度計的紅色酒精柱。她用抹布擦去玻璃上的水霧，濕布的環形折痕覆在指尖，節奏與剛才糾纏的線圈出奇一致。她闔上眼，拇指慢慢描過那柔軟紋路，再描一次，更慢。

回到工作臺，她提起麻線，這回讓視覺退到一旁，只憑指尖與鉤針間的拉力與回彈工作。線圈順暢滑過，不再被分叉主導節奏。吊帶漸長時，先前盤旋的那隻白蝶落在陶麋鹿背上，翅膀輕晃，讓小雕像微微傾側。塵土在臺面上漣漪般掠過又靜止，鹿身的不穩姿態映著她先前的猶疑。她的拇指懸在下一個空圈上，粗麻線伏在攤開的掌心。
