English Original
A wooden rake leaned against the cool shadowed wall, while beyond the doorway sunlight danced on the mirror-flat brine. Next to the rake, a curved, pearl-pale fragment rested on the threshold, half in shade, half ablaze with luster. Outside, Thea adjusted her straw hat, stepped across the brittle crust, and stopped when her boot nudged that fragile shard. A distant bicycle bell rang twice, crisp against the low hush inside the hut. Beyond the pools, thin clouds drifted north, yet inside the hut the air stayed perfectly still, holding a coolness that hugged every rough plank.
She left the shard where it lay and waded into the nearest pool, guiding the rake’s flat teeth across the water in long, parallel sweeps. Salt flakes shivered, gathered, and caught against the handle’s nicks—small dents that read like the quiet inheritance of many harvests. Warm air rose from the pans, yet a fermented tang clung nearer the channel where yesterday’s brine had thickened overnight. Dana crouched at the far edge and lifted a dripping bucket, calling, “This lane is ready!” before setting it down with a gentle splash. Thea nodded, but her gaze kept drifting to the pale fragment, still balanced between darkness and glare.
Mid-morning light sharpened; crystals grew heavier on the rake, and Thea finally returned to the threshold, plucking the shard between two fingertips. Its surface cracked like thin sugar under pressure, sprinkling white dust that melted where it touched her damp sleeve. She paused, rolled it once, then hesitated, sensing a faint give beneath the crust rather than the expected brittle snap. She drew a slow breath, steadied her hands, and dipped the piece into the bucket Dana had left, swirling it under the cooler water. The rind of salt sloughed away, and a minute crustacean, no bigger than her thumb-nail, unfurled translucent legs and scuttled against her palm. What she had taken for mineral sparkle was only a temporary armor pressed upon a passenger from the tide.
She lowered herself to the overflow channel, where thin water threaded from pool to pool, and opened her hand beside a patch of flowing shade. The tiny traveler clambered off, vanished beneath the rippling skin, and drifted with the current toward deeper pans. For a moment she remained crouched, the rake balanced across her knees, listening to brine trickle and wooden handles creak under distant work. Wind skimmed the shining basin, and Thea pressed the rake’s edge back into the water, setting fresh crystals in motion.
Translation
