“How does light reach a chamber tucked that deep?” Joel stood beside the low bench, gaze fixed on a band of brightness slipping through the hive’s entrance slot and climbing the far comb. Renn steadied the stacked box, certain the hive lay perfectly aligned, every corridor open. The foragers landing at the slot traced smooth arcs, yet the corridor behind them looked dim, almost clogged. Renn lifted the pine lid in one motion, revealing columns of frames suspended like narrow corridors in a vast hall. A single bee floated between wall and comb, its path mapping the volume overhead with the care of an architect drawing ceiling lines.
Renn slid the hive tool—a thin steel wedge—between two frames and eased one clear. Space narrowed on either side; the wooden bars brushed the gloves. Slanting afternoon light struck the comb’s belly, and honey inside open cells burned a quiet coral glow that deepened toward the base. Sealed cells capped in matte wax marked brood caught mid-metamorphosis; the geometry stayed flawless, yet the living timetable under each cap remained hidden. Renn prepared to lift the frame fully, certain it would stand ready for harvest. A gust bended a nearby willow, trimming daylight, and the corridor dimmed again.
Halfway out, the frame stalled. The next bar leaned closer than memory allowed, its edge scraping the comb’s sidewall. Renn paused, weight shifting from heel to toe. The silhouette of a branch crossed the frame, confusing depth, turning straight lines uncertain. Another tug risked tearing fresh cells, so Renn lowered the comb, then pivoted the tool sideways, gaining millimeters. That adjustment tipped the frame just enough for a thin slip of honey to flow, catching sun in a sudden amber thread. The thread sagged, tapped the hive wall, and snapped—an unplanned signal that the inner stores had thickened sooner than charts predicted.
Renn replaced the comb and stepped back to the bench. Earlier certainty about timing thinned like that broken thread; harvest might wait, or begin, yet no figure on a sheet could settle the matter here. A drop of honey now clung to the bench’s edge—same bench glimpsed at first glance, yet its surface carried new stickiness and a faint scent of warmed sugar. Renn rested the tool beside the drop, watching it pool and hold a circle the width of a bee’s eye, then let the afternoon hum continue, corridors bright or dark as they pleased.
