The pilot cracked the valve again; flame roared three seconds, and orange glare washed over Lenora’s knuckles, brightening the eyelet balanced in her palm. When the roar collapsed into stillness, the fragment seemed lighter, its stripes almost translucent against the sky that filled every horizon. The balloon found an upper layer where motion grew slower, and the fairground drifted backward until the marquee reduced to a corner of color among hedgerows. Bram spoke without turning, his words thin in the open air: “All clear above.” Lenora breathed against the quiet, rolled the eyelet once between thumb and finger, then folded the cord back, pushing it gently beneath the nearest rattan strand.
