No sparrow rattled the frost-shadowed sill when Selene drew the heavy curtain aside this morning.
The window stretched almost floor to ceiling, a tall rectangle whose depth appeared larger than the room behind it.
Frost ferns filled the glass from edge to edge, their branching ribs outlining vaults, corridors, and chambers like a translucent city map.
Light sifted through the crystals, landing across the boards in pale ribbons that stopped just before her boots.
She remembered the sure rhythm of her clay studio, yet here the space within the pane invited a different sort of shaping.
A knuckle brushed the timber frame; its coarse grain felt warmer than the sparkling surface a breath away.
Selene pressed a fingertip into the frost, tracing the confident curve a sculptor uses when scoring wet clay.
The groove glimmered, then crystals thickened, making the mark dwindle until only a faint blemish remained.
Floorboards flexed; Grant arrived holding a roasted gourd wrapped in a coarse kitchen towel, steam curling from its loosened lid.
"Look," he said, lowering the bundle, "its skin still lets off plenty of heat."
She shifted the warm parcel toward the glass; a transparent oval burst open as frost melted and droplets began to evaporate upward.
Through that sudden portal, rooftops, telephone lines, and distant chimney smoke arranged themselves like miniatures inside a lantern.
Selene moved the bundle side to side, widening the view, yet each clearance narrowed again when the gourd drifted away.
She paused, then passed the warm shell to Grant; together they steered it along the pane, opening sunlit corridors through frozen walls.
Trails vanished quickly; beads slipped downward, froze, then slipped again, a quiet cadence beyond their touch.
Without speaking, they stopped; the window, now stippled with irregular clearings, resembled an incomplete mosaic of bright shards and opaque ice.
Outside, a chimney pulse of smoke tilted, reminding them that the wider cold city continued whether or not their patterns persisted.
Soon the gourd cooled, the portals shrank, and new crystals crept inward while morning light kept sliding across the floorboards.
Translation
