Colette pressed the brass lever, three seconds of flame hummed overhead, and the basket lifted a breath before settling into stillness again. Her left boot nudged a second wool hat resting on the floorboards. No head waited for it, yet she slid the hat toward the corner as though keeping space clear. Beside the altimeter, a small metal angelfish swung on its split ring, tapping the steel rail each time the basket rocked. Underfoot, the linen padding held faint patches of warmth where someone had once stood longer than she did now. A cotton cord drifted near her ankle, its coils tangled into a soft quandary she would need to sort before landing.
Jasper balanced by the opposite rail, studying the spherical compass housing that gleamed like polished marble under the sun. He raised his chin. “Altitude reads eight hundred metres,” he said, voice low so the silence could remain intact. Gregarious clusters of cumulus crowded the western rim of the sky, jostling like friends at a fair. A solitary higher cloud, a pale wanderer, glided above them without hurry. Colette knelt and started untwisting the cord; the loops resisted, sliding one over another, squeaking against her gloves. Jasper crouched beside her, his elbow brushing the emptier half of the basket. Together they rolled the stubborn knots between their palms until the length lay straight and quiet.
A crimson sphere drifted into view, rising from the patchwork fields below like an escaped thought. For a moment Colette mistook it for a signal light, then cotton string trailing beneath revealed an ordinary party balloon climbing on a shallow thermal. Colette murmured, “Look at that.” It was ascending toward the envelope’s fabric, slow but determined. She reached for the red nylon vent cord, fingers closing, then pausing—cool steel cable grazed her wrist and she measured the distance again. Jasper’s hand settled on the burner lever without comment; his glance met hers, neither of them speaking. She exhaled and gave the cord a brief tug. Warm breath hissed from the crown, and the basket eased into a controlled descent, dropping a gentle arm’s length. The party balloon sailed overhead, its glossy skin flashing sunlight before it vanished inside the crowd of clouds.
Silence reclaimed the basket. Colette returned the coiled cord to its peg, then rested both palms on the rim where the steel cable ran cool beneath the leather wrap. The second wool hat still waited in the corner, its rounded crown catching a stripe of late-morning light. Jasper checked the altimeter and gave a small nod toward the horizon. Colette lifted the brass lever again, yet this time the press was slow, a measured squeeze. Flame roared for a heartbeat shorter than before, and the orange glow faded sooner, leaving the wicker floor awash in quiet warmth.
Translation
