Each Thursday since the narrow repair shop started receiving morning light, a brass alarm clock on the front shelf clicked once and settled, its ritual as predictable as the creak in the floorboards. Today the click arrived on time, yet the minute hand clung to the twelve, while the second hand quivered against the glass dome, reflecting a faint orange glow from the bench lamp.
Quinn stepped from the storeroom, wiping wood dust from his palms. Three goose-neck lamps were pulled closer, their warm circles overlapping to set the scene around the silent clock. "Strange sound?" Josie asked from behind the counter, but Quinn only lifted the clock, letting its cool base meet his forearm before resting it under the brightest lamp. A soldering iron rested in its stand, tip glowing; the air directly above it shimmered. Beneath that shimmer, a kettle on the hot plate whispered toward a boil, the lid beginning a gentle rattle.
Quinn loosened the back plate screws. Inside, a coil-spring lay crooked, pinned by a thin cedar wedge: the work of some careful carpenter who once shortened a gap the easy way. The wedge refused to slip free; every tug sent a light metallic rasp across the bench, as though the clock tried to proclaim its reluctance. Steam finally escaped the kettle in bubbling excitement, curling above the workbench before drifting toward the window. Quinn paused, thumb resting on the cool brass, then angled the lamp lower, choosing patience over force. Outside that high window, a small courtyard waited in unmoving shade—a serene escape glimpsed only when tools paused and breathing slowed.
Heat from the lamp crept into the gears. After a minute, the cedar wedge eased; a careful twist of tweezers lifted it clear, and the coil sprang into proper alignment with a muted ping. Quinn rotated the winding key twice. The second hand slid forward, found its rhythm, and the minute hand followed with dignified caution. He tested the alarm lever, then glanced at Josie; she offered no words, only raised eyebrows. A final polish removed the carpenter’s fingerprint of resin from the brass rim. Warm evening air slipped through the open transom and drifted across the bench while Quinn placed the ticking clock back on the shelf.
Translation
