Odette caught his raised eyebrow and nodded before rolling the glowing gather across the marver, steam ascending in a wavering ribbon. The charred smell of wet wood met Paul’s nose, mineral and sweet at once.

A low rack held a cool practice pipe, and Paul lifted it, recalling balloon parties where lungs handled rubber without worry. He drew a steady breath, sealed his lips over the mouthpiece, and blew a sizable amount of air into the hollow tube. The clear bubble that swelled at the far end leaned off-center, dragged by gravity because his hands stayed still instead of turning. Glass thinned along the drooping side until it showed pale threads, hinting at collapse. Odette’s voice drifted from the bench, light rather than instructive: “You can see the color shift now.” Paul shifted his stance, the hot scent of iron touching his throat as the bubble’s skin cooled faster than he expected.

He started a cautious rotation, yet the weight of molten glass resisted, sliding toward the floor despite his effort. Memory of the hinge’s counterweight flickered; its rhythm had balanced mass with motion rather than brute speed. With one resourceful twist, he angled the pipe upward and quickened the spin only at the moment the sagging side passed highest. The bubble rounded, its earlier tilt erased, and tiny silver pinpricks drifted across the surface where cooler air kissed it. A thin hiss escaped as he cooled the bubble against the marver, steam ascending again but softer now. He paused, pipe still rolling, and a faint smell of resin drifted from a charred block resting nearby, newly noticed.

When the shape steadied, he set the pipe in its cradle, the glow dimmer yet intact. He waited through one heartbeat, then lifted it again and repeated the breath, slower, turning the shaft from a higher angle. The glass answered with an even, quiet swell, and a gentle ribbon of steam climbed above the rim. The pipe rotated once more, slower this time, the pale bubble glimmering beside the furnace glare.
