English Original
The canopy’s shadow had crawled from the painted lions to the mirrored panels, a silent clock that told Zara the ride had turned for a long while. During the next slow rise of her horse, a narrow smear beneath the front hoof shone darker than the varnish—a trace of something fresh that the afternoon light could not hide.
She let the horse sink and, on the next ascent, steadied herself with one palm on the brass pole while two fingertips swept through the smear. The substance clung thicker than oil and, caught by the bulbs overhead, glittered with fine mineral sparks. “Strange,” she whispered, rubbing thumb against fingertip until the paste began to solidify into a brittle film. Panels slid past—painted galleons, cliff ladders, every scene promising adventure—as a clipped hedge of shrub and roses drifted in and out of view beyond the railing.
The ring arm swung near. Zara reached but paused; the sticky film tugged at her skin, and she weighed another attempt while the horse rose a breath higher than comfort. Brass chimed. She changed grip, wiped her hand on the saddle blanket, and this time caught the ring clean. Its underside carried the same dark smear, narrower now, and the earlier trace spun into new shape: the mark did not fall from the horse at all but from hundreds of rings brushed by eager hands, layer upon layer until one ride ago it slipped free.
The platform slowed; music thinned to the last wobbling note. Zara rested her earlier-smudged fingers around the cooling pole once more and looped the spotted ring over the carved ear of her horse.
