English Original
Zara paused on the narrow causeway, her gaze steady on a wooden rake leaning against the salt pan’s low wall. Salt glare climbed into the air, yet the handle stayed shaded by Zara’s hat brim, turning grainy wood into a muted brown. Beaded lines of brine slid downward, evaporating before they reached the floor of dried flakes. Beyond, Dashiel crouched over a basin where new crystals floated like tiny hexagons, but Zara kept her distance. Between the rake’s teeth a thin veil of salt glittered, fragile as ice on a pond, yet dry enough to hiss when wind brushed it. Zara’s shadow draped over the wall, darker than charcoal against the white glare, and still she waited, knees bent ever so slightly.
When the heat built across her back, she stepped forward and curled fingers around the rake’s warm handle. The wood shifted a fraction, scattering a faint crackle through the silent pan like dry snow crushed under boots. She drew the blade across the surface; instead of lifting, the damp crust clung together, knitted tighter than she expected. One pulse of extra force risked scraping the basin itself and could jeopardize the clean layer waiting underneath. Her glove slipped, and she nearly lost touch with the handle, salt dust blooming around her knees. She stopped, straightened, and let the rake rest where it was, the sun pressing steadily on her shoulders.
She walked to the channel head, lifted the wooden bucket, and dipped it through the mirror of brine shimmering beside stone. The liquid, thick with late-morning saturation, glugged into the pail and released a faint ribbon of steam against cooler air. As she carried it back, droplets tapped her wrist, their warmth recalling the salt that had resisted her rake a moment earlier. A single bead slid along her knitted wristband, paused, and broke apart exactly where the crust had refused to part. Her steps slowed; the angle of her forearm mimicked the rake’s tilt, and suddenly the resistance made sense without a word.
She returned to the basin, set the bucket aside, and placed both palms on the rake to lower its blade. Instead of pulling, she rocked the handle forward, letting the weight ride the water film until the crust lifted in a fragile sheet. The flakes split where the earlier scrape had snagged, and the pan flashed brighter as fresh facets met the sun. Dashiel’s voice drifted across the causeway, light and distant, “Better,” yet she stayed silent, feeling the rake settle. A breeze slid under her hat brim, and the warmth shifted into a faint, grateful coolness. Zara pressed her thumb once more into the cooling crust, the surface giving way with just the softness she had searched for earlier.
Translation
