The loom had run this pattern for weeks, every card advancing with a single click before the threads lifted. Now a second, fainter note slipped between the first and the weft beat, as if the wood spoke under its breath. Sunlight from the upper skylight poured through floating warp cords, turning the dust into thin ribbons of gold between their shoulders. The hush of empty looms beyond the cabinet framed the odd tapping like punctuation.

Cleo slid a card from the hanging chain and flattened it against the afternoon glare spilling through the tall archway window. Its edges had gone brittle; tiny flakes of paper glittered whenever her thumb flexed the corner. “We trimmed this one last month,” she murmured, pointing at a shallow crescent where a wayward hole had been pared with a chisel. Henrik lifted the card toward the ceiling beam; light pricked every perforation, turning the row into a floating constellation. The second tap still lurked beneath the cabinet boards, though no split hook showed itself along the comb. A pigeon shifted on the window ledge, its wings pacing the wooden vibrations that chased the second tap.

Henrik fed the card back, yet his hand stopped when a shard of brightness redirected across the reading head, bounced by the shuttle’s polished nose. For a breath both of them simply watched the moving speck race over the hooks and vanish into a shadow between cords. That flicker fell exactly where the card numbers should line up, revealing two identical digits side by side — the chain had been spliced in reverse. Cleo exhaled, then began to dismantle the loop, unlinking the misaligned pair while Henrik rolled stray cloth away from the breast beam. Threads settled again, yet the fabric already carried a pale ghost row, a quiet souvenir the next yard would never forget.

When the chain clicked forward after the correction, the cabinet answered with a single, familiar tap; the loom’s rhythm closed like an easy breath. Neither spoke; Cleo’s sleeve brushed the blueprint, and its pinned corner tore a little more, the rip widening silently along the brittle paper edge. Outside, late light slanted through the archway window and glazed the loose threads on the take-up beam, each one catching amber before the sun slipped lower. Beside the treadle sat Henrik’s forgotten water glass, half drained, the rim smeared with a dusty fingerprint that clouded the last glow inside it.
