Each correction improved one thing while undoing the other, and the belly of the vase began to thicken unpredictably.

A hush arrived when a stray sheet from Selwyn’s sketchpad lifted on a mild corridor draft and drifted toward the glowing mouth. Zander halted mid-turn, elbow locking; the paper rode the warm column like a pale moth. During that pause the glass stiffened further, and a faint seam formed where the surface touched the earlier chill. Ben exhaled through his nose, but spoke only the tool’s name: “Steam block.” The syllables jolted Zander’s focus; he lowered the gather onto the damp wooden block, steam hissing and tiny droplets scattering iridescent halos through the furnace light. The block flattened the troublesome bulge; at the same instant the vase’s waist surrendered some planned narrowness, trading grace for survival. He eased the pipe onto the cradle, unhooked his gloves, and walked with Selwyn toward the bay door where cooler air brushed their forearms.

The furnace maintained its amber roar, sending soft ripples of light that climbed the brick wall in restless stripes. Inside the annealing oven, the vase cooled slowly, its uneven waist catching reflections that drifted across the glass like wandering fish. One curled scrap of scorched paper clung to the concrete, its brittle edge lifting whenever the overhead fan stirred the air. A mirrored sheen of water quivered on the marver, refracting the glow into sharp triangles that slid across the steel surface. Nearby, the damp wooden block released a thin plume of steam, sweet cedar musk hanging briefly before the draft carried it higher.
