Every summer ride began the same for Nolan, palm against the smooth gunwale while the log boat nosed into the channel. Today a mallard surfaced beside the bow, paddling within the narrow clearance as though the concrete trough were a private canal. Sunlight followed them only a short span before the first tunnel swallowed both boat and bird. The ceiling rose into a shallow vault, and the water’s sustained hum bounced between the walls like quiet machinery. Nolan’s fingers marked distances out of habit—thumb to little finger, a quick carpenter’s trick borrowed from winter weekends in his father’s workshop. Yet here the measurements slipped; shadows stretched the space farther than his hand could track.
As the boat drifted deeper, painted cliffs appeared on either side, forming a miniature settlement halfway up their rockface. Windows the size of postage stamps dotted the facades, each angled so the duck’s ripples threw shifting glints across them, turning the static scene alive. Nolan leaned to push against the right wall, expecting the familiar leverage of a canoe on open water. The channel resisted, guide rails catching the hull and sending a gentle shudder through the seat instead of a turn. He steadied, then glanced at the duck, which had slipped ahead and paused under a panel of glowing stones. They lit in reaction to moving water—an interactive display disguised as geology.
The tunnel pinched into a corridor scarcely wider than his shoulders, and the ceiling suddenly receded, revealing a sharp rectangle of sky at the far exit. Nolan hesitated, one knee braced, wondering whether the duck intended to follow the upcoming plunge. A single quack echoed once, then the bird hopped onto a side ledge and shook droplets off its feathers, content to let the ride continue without it. The gesture rewrote Nolan’s earlier thought; the mallard had not been a curious passenger at all, merely harvesting the current until the slope grew unfriendly. He pressed both palms flat, this time letting the boat choose its line instead of arguing with the rails.
The bow tipped; water raced forward and flared outward when the hull met the pool below, drenching the fiberglass in a cool sheet. Nolan laughed—a clipped burst lost inside the spray—then blinked away droplets and checked the ledge overhead. The mallard still stood there, head tilted, watching the aftermath like a visitor in a river-themed museum. He raised two fingers in an uncertain salute and felt the boat settle into the calm return stream, rocking in ever-smaller arcs there. “Well worth the wait,” he said. A cool spray clings to Nolan's sleeves, and he lifts a hand toward the mallard drifting back into the gentle current.
Translation
