English Original
Outside the half-open window, a sparrow landed on the peeling sill, wings flicking in the midday glare, while inside Joel steadied a rough amber lump beneath the lamp. The bicycle bell on the lane chimed once and faded, yet the workshop kept its sustained hush of resin scent and scratchy sandpaper. Joel’s first coarse stroke made the stone flounder in his damp fingers, so he cupped it tighter and felt heat bloom through the rind. The lamp’s filament hummed, throwing a narrow blade of amber light across the bench.
Between strokes, he noticed the bird’s beak tapping at specks on the wooden latticework that braced the lower pane. Each tap loosened crumbs of powdered resin the breeze had carried from earlier polishing. He paused, curious, and lifted the magnifying glass; amber under glass shimmered, but the sparrow under light simply hopped, gathered, and gulped granules. “Curious little collector,” Joel whispered, the words soft enough that Sylvie across the bench kept tracing her grit grades. Outside, cloud shadow slid over roof tiles, yet the sill kept its tiny glow.
Another pass with finer paper darkened the scrap, and a warmer pine smell rose, drifting toward the perch like silent bait. The sparrow returned, an inventive gleaner, scooping the new dust until its throat showed a faint amber smudge beneath the feathers. A faint vibration followed, almost musical, where powder struck the glass jar beside Joel’s elbow. When it left this time, the uplift of wings scattered a handful of unclaimed specks across Joel’s sketches, flecking their charcoal lines with gold. Joel stopped mid-stroke; grit still touched resin, yet his eyes followed those drifting shards as though another window inside the lump had opened.
Three returns, three quiet harvests—by then the powder on the sill, now forming a delicate mound, glowed brighter than the lump still turning under his thumb. He set the amber down, selected the finest sheet, and scraped only at its edge, just enough to feed the small pile. The strip soon thinned, corners curling, a visible price gradually paid for each offering, yet the room itself brightened as afternoon angled deeper through the window. Dust motes spun in the shaft, mimicking distant galaxies in quiet orbit. Joel tipped a fresh pinch of luminous dust onto the sill, and the sparrow darted in to claim it.
Translation
