English Original
The engine’s low putter thinned to a hush as the boat drifted into the stone chamber, echoes folding over one another until only drip taps remained. Celina rested both palms on the balance beam, certain of the weight and the slow groan the gate would give once she leaned. She had worked locks since spring, each movement coherent in her muscles like chords memorised on a piano. Water lapped against dark timber with a gentle clunk, a lullaby that promised no surprises. A heron’s wingbeat suddenly slapped the air above, then vanished behind the towpath hedge.
She pushed; the beam shifted, yet a dry scrape answered instead of the usual bass groan, and her shoulders paused mid-press. A pale chalk arc crossed the iron hinge, almost rubbed away, as though someone had circled a flaw then left without repair. Behind her, Arlo looped a rope around a bollard and called, “Level looks even—nothing to rush.” Celina nodded yet kept her gaze on the chalk, the small remnant turning the lock from a routine machine into a muttering stranger.
The sluice rattled open, and water hissed through the paddles; still, the boat rose only a finger’s breadth before stalling. Days of rain had dulled water quality, turning the surface cloudy and hiding depth from any quick glance. Celina’s boot squeaked on plank as she paused, caught between winding the paddle harder or closing it to search for debris— a moral dilemma measured in gallons and minutes. No sudden insight arrived; she eased the paddle shut and listened until the churn shrank to a thin trickle. In layman’s terms, the chamber now acted like a stubborn tap, accepting water only in sips, so she reopened the gear by half a turn. She stepped back onto the stern deck, wiping chalk dust on her trousers while rope fibres settled and the gate drifted wide with a coherent groan.
The rope slackened, swaying once before lying quiet against the cabin roof, its damp fibres catching late sunlight. Chalk crumbs clung to the balance beam, a faint crescent bright against the dark wood. A ripple tapped the timber, repeating the chalk curve in liquid form before slipping away.
